Ingredients
Yerba Mate: Yerba mate is a traditional South American drink made from the leaves of the Ilex paraguariensis plant, which grows in countries such as Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay and parts of Brazil. The leaves are dried, finely ground and then brewed in hot water. The drink is known for its slightly bitter taste and is often drunk from a special cup with a metal straw called a "bombilla".
Usage
Fill a mate (drinking cup) 2/3 full with yerba (tea). Place your hand flat on the opening of the mate, turn the entire cup over, shake it well for a moment. Turn the cup over again and remove your hand from the opening. The fine particles of the yerba are now on your hand and can be wiped off. Now shake the Mate so that the yerba is on one side of the mate, creating a cavity on the other side. Keep the Mate tilted and pour a little cold water into the hollow. Do not pour too much water; the top of the yerba should not get wet. Leave the Mate tilted for a few minutes until the yerba has absorbed the water. Place your thumb on the top (mouth) of the bombilla so that it is sealed. Then push the filter part of the bombilla to the bottom of the Mate into the hollow part. Pour hot (just short of boiling) water into the hollow part just below the rim of the mate. Suck (gently) the tea through the bombilla and.... enjoy.
