What is MCT oil?

MCT stands for Medium Chain Triglyceride. Triglyceride is another word for a fat molecule, which consists of a glycerol “backbone” with 3 loose fatty acids attached. Medium Chain means that the fatty acids have a medium chain (6 to 12 carbon atoms), in contrast to 'normal' fats which have long chains (13 to 22 carbon atoms). MCT oil is mainly extracted from Palm oil and coconut oil. For example, in coconut oil, the MCT content is about 65%. MCT oil falls under the category of saturated fats. Unlike normal saturated fats, these medium chain saturated fats are not harmful to the heart and blood vessels. MCT even has several health benefits which we will cover in this blog.

Since MCTs are small molecules, they, like glucose, can be absorbed directly from the intestinal wall into our bloodstream and from there taken directly to the mitochondria as a source of energy. Also, MCTs do not require energy from the liver, bile and pancreas to aid in digestion, as with all other fats.
